MA INTERIOR DESIGN-2022-2023-UCA
As a group we were required to create a space that responds to our experience in Margate. Dreamland amusement park, a hollow façade of colors, laughter and bright lights of the magic garden, parts of it operated in the shadows. The phrase -'An elephant in the room'- refers to these. It is an obvious problem that is avoided either because it is uncomfortable or awkward to mention. As a group we developed an uncomfortable scene that was titled 'Shipwreck'.
The Shipwreck story was the paradigm of what we collectively developed as a group. The Shipwreck storyline was based on an imaginative mystical Sea Creature that capsizes a ship in Margate (MY UCA, 2022).
Site Context
The Shell Groto had interesting motifs laid by the different shapes and types of shells. Visiting the Shell Groto helped us develop our initial porotypes of the project.
Group Work-12
As a group we visited the Carl Freedman Gallery which housed contemporary pieces by artists such as Jon Key, an American artist who likes to depict the nuance of identity within the black queer community. Another interesting piece that was being showcased were the installations themed 'To all Kings who have no crowns', which a group of disabled artists created.

Visiting the Margate caves was a great experience as we learnt about the history of the caves when they were used as chalk mines in the early 18th century. Visiting the caves introduced us to luminous paint which was one of the fundamental elements we used to develop our project by experimenting with UV light.
The last Gallery we visited was the Turner Gallery which had a collection of abstract pieces curated by Sophie Von Hellermann and Anne Ryan. The Vibrant colored cut outs were themed 'Sirens'.
TEXTURE RUBBINGS
We started by experimenting with texture rubbings collected from Dreamland and areas around

Initial Prototypes

Our second trip to Margate resulted from feedback we got from our group tutorial to collect natural materials which we would use to influence the development of our individual Prototypes. We collected sea weed, shells, sand and sea water.
During our trip to Margate we visited the Haeckles Skin care and Spa Shop that houses a range of skin care products that use local Sea weed as a base within their products.

PROJECT THEME
THE FIVE SENSES
Selected Prototypes
The models shown in the photographed images above were the selected initial porotypes we would use as a group to formulate our initial understanding of the brief and develop our project further.
The model was made using 5mm Foam Board which was then cut into a series of shapes to come up with a final piece of a whale and some tortuous waves

1:1 Prototype
Using my expertise in creating a paper mâché my role in this process of creating a 1:1 model was in the mixing of the mâché and layering of the Modroc .
We first started off creating a steel like structure using scraps of steel we found at the back of the wood workshop however the scraps of steel were sharp and the stell could not be weld to the aluminium base.
This idea was dismissed and I suggested a mâché mix that would be supported by a wire frame mesh as a supporting structure.
The simple wire and string model shown above was created by combining certain features from everyone’s experimental models. In addition to the feedback received from our lecturer we used this to formulate our 1:1 head piece prototype seen on the images on the right hand side.

SECONDARY RESEARCH AND FINAL MODEL
THEME IMPLEMENTATION
The natural materials shown above and the model are the elements we used to formulate our project.
The 5 senses theme chosen from our primary research was what we used to develop our project further.
Using scraps of 18mm MDF we found in the wood workshop, we created circular ringlet discs of different sizes that would be supported by woven string.

Taking into consideration the feedback we received, we incorporated the weaving within the head piece and made it dense.
My role in this process was to formulate another weaving technique that would compliment the weaving done by one of the other group members I needed it to be be simpler and much quicker to blend in with the already existing weaving that was done
Dark green and light green Bio degradable plastic was used in the twisting weaving technique to create a contrast of colors that made the helmet piece more aesthetically pleasing.
Model Making Process

The 'spine' of the helmet can be seen clearly in the colored photograph shown below. As seen in the images the used circular coffee filters made the helmet piece more proportional and the blending of green colors complimented the overall outlook of the piece

Re:Use
The image shown on the right shows the final illustration of the Sea Monster that was done by one of the group members. During one of our numerous tutorials, we were asked to give the Sea Monster a name. My role was to help find a name that would suit the character of the Monster and the Shipwreck story, hence the name Skelto.

SKELTO- THE SEA MONSTER

The sketches above show the initial Sea Monster development . A series of different imaginary mystical creatures were drawn and elements from each drawing were put together to form Skelto. After several reviews it developed further to the final drawing seen above.

MYSTICAL SEA CREATURE

SEATING
Inspired by the fluidity of the colourful cardboard pieces at the Turner Gallery, I developed the same synergy of form for my seating concept. However after group reviews we decided that my concept was a little more complex and had less seats.
My role in the development of the seating was quite significant as I developed the first CAD prototype for the technicalities of construction.
Additionally I was involved in creating a seating form that would correlate to our visit in Margate.
GROUP PRESENTATION

A week before the final group submission we had a presentation to showcase the progress of work we had done in preparation for the exhibition and final submission.
We received positive feedback that helped formulate our final piece. As seen in the next development of our project.
We added Sea Weed we gathered from Margate to the headpiece and added eyeballs with uv paint that gave an illuminating effect when using a uv torch.
Model Making Process

Using elements from my initial concept idea. I helped develop the seats from the cutting stages right through to the final stages of seat layering using biodegradable plastic and cushioning of the seat with sea weed.

We used the CNC machine to cut the shapes of the seating.
We then sanded off the rough edges to make it easier for construction. Using the pinning machine and wood glue we were able to create the seats seen on the image on the right hand side

POST REVIEW DEVELOPMENT
Development of Seating

Comfort to our chair was added by using our upcycled recycled bags. We crushed and placed the bags onto the top of our chair supported with staples by using a staple gun.
The same process was carried throughout the mesh and Seaweed.
Crushed shells we collected in Margate was used to add a rough texture surface to our seating. The crushed shells were placed by sprinkling them over an application of glue e laid on the seats.
The final seats we made are seen in the image below

Smell

After our group review to add some light source in the helmet/head piece as it was too dark, we drew inspiration from the luminous paint used in the Margate Caves that we visited at the onset of the project to bring out this feature.
We created eye-balls using white polystyrene foam which we then painted with UV paint. For a more realistic eyeball appearance we used images of iris cut-outs.
To add more depth to the eyeball I suggested we use red yarn for the veins to hang off the top of the inner helmet however we could not find any yarn and we compromised with red sewing string.

Development of the Web
My role in the development of the web like piece was to ensure that the stencils were cut accordingly using the laser cutter. I uploaded the Sea Monster illustration and selected the areas that should be cut.
The stencils were then used on garden fabric and spared over using black spray paint.
Colour was then added to the drawings by using uv paint for users to view whilst using the uv torches.

The stencils were used to get an exact replica of the Sea Monster and also helped create the same exact forms repeatedly over the fabric

EXHIBITION
HERBERT READ GALLERY-UCA

The designated space allocated for our Group as seen in the marked space model above was 1.5metres x 2metres. Using the model created by the Engineers in each group we were able to ascertain for how much space we would need.
My role was to ensure that each piece worked on was set accordingly within the space.
I first started by laying bin bags which were taped to the floor for the Margate beach sand to sit on.
Sand was added on the taped bin bags and the whole piece started coming together. I wanted users to smell the sea weed therefore I used the remaining sea weed and tied it onto some string to create a Sea weed loop above . This added more context to the entirety of the piece.
Setting Up

The Exhibition was a success as our space was in line with the brief and we gave users a chance to interact with nature through smell and touch of the seats gave them a sense of texture.
The 5 senses theme that our group initially focused on was executed thoroughly during the exhibition as seen in the photographs and video taken.
I suggested that users needed a guide line to allow them to grab a UV torch to experience the Sea Monster, therefore I created the rickety looking sign age in line with the Shipwreck theme shown below using rope and scraps of MDF board from the wood workshop.
During our exhibition on the 16th of December the Sea Monster sound was played via a laptop connected to wireless headphones.
As it drew to an end our Lecturer inquired as to how the sound would play without us being around. This became a challenge as we couldn’t figure out how to have the sound available for users to experience.
My role was to help create a QR-Code using the code generating app which would allow users to listen to the sound making the piece even more interactive.

Using Go Pro Camera’s I borrowed from the university we managed to capture and record each users experience as they listened to the sound and looked above at the eyeballs. Most user’s felt the intensity of the shipwreck experience and came out looking terrified.
A video showing user experience during the exhibition has can be seen in the link shown below in the Red cube.
Using the Headphones and UV torches users got to experience the Margate Shipwreck.

The Plan and Sectional Elevations shown were done by one of our group members. To make the drawings stand out for the basis of my portfolio I added people for scale and inspired by Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus I Played around with shades of colour for a more aesthetic appeal.
The drawings shown are a representation of the 1.5metres x 2metres space we had during the course of our exhibition.

CLEAN WATER
Scarcity
of
With fast growing urban areas in most developing countries in Sub Saharan Africa, improved water systems is a burden that is continuously ignored especially in rural and high density areas. In Sub Saharan Africa, 24% of the population have access to safe and clean drinking water (UN World Water Development Report, 2019)
African communities face a serious threat from contaminated water. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), an estimated 115 people in Africa pass away every hour from illnesses brought on by poor hygiene, unsuitable sanitation, and water that is contaminated. What specifically leads to water contamination in Africa? (The Last Well, 2019).

The UN 2019 report focuses on policy makers and those within practice to undertake effective strategies that address the wide disparities between those with clean and safe drinking water and the majority of the total population without clean and safe drinking water, Gilbert F. Houngbo, chair of UN-Water and of the international fund for agricultural development, stressed this as he addressed the assembly (UN World Water Development Report, 2019).

Demographics

In planning literature from Sub-Saharan Africa, namely Zambia, the words "informal settlement" and "slum" are essentially synonymous in connotation and sometimes used interchangeably (Richmond and Namuli, 2018).
A dense section of the city with little access to urban amenities and defined by substandard living conditions is known as an informal urban settlement (Mwamba, 2020).

Drinking water sources in sub-Saharan Africa are still susceptible to faecal contamination because of the region's poor environmental conditions. Approximately 215 million people use open defecation which is a significant source of pathogen transmission that results in diarrheal diseases (Gwimbi, P.et al.,2019).

Developing countries experience higher cases of bacterial and parasite gastroenteritis than other countries. This reflects variations in sanitation and hygiene and is thus vulnerable to regulation by public health interventions (Jain and Jain,2014).
A Brief History of Cholera in Europe
In the 19th century, cholera was a serious worldwide problem that frequently caused widespread outbreaks in European towns, with the Indian subcontinent being the primary source of these epidemics. In 1854, John Snow undertook ground-breaking research on the cholera outbreaks in England, and notably in London. He showed that the main cause of the epidemics was contaminated water. His extensive research of a sickness outbreak in London's Soho neighbourhood led him to the conclusion that the contaminated water from the Broad Street pump was the cause, and as a result, the removal of the handle caused the epidemic to end (Tulchinsky,2018).

MATERIALS-WHAT SUSTAINABLE WAY CAN
FILTRATION TAKE PLACE?

XYLEM TISSUE
A low-tech filter made from peeling cross sections of sapwood branches has been successfully used to filter germs by MIT engineers who have been studying sapwood's natural filtering capacity (Chu, 2021).
The filters' capacity to eliminate pollutants like rotavirus and E. coli, which are frequently the cause of diarrhoeal illness, was also examined by the researchers.

CARBON BLOCKS
In the course of filtering water, carbon is a medium that is frequently utilised. In reality, carbon filtration is used in some capacity in almost all types of water filtration systems, including refrigerator, shower, pitcher, reverse osmosis, camping, and whole-house filters (ESPWaterProducts,2023).
For the purpose of this project, activated coconut carbon will be used from coconut shells as it is a renewable source.

The three primary types of UV rays—UVA, UVB, and UVC—UVC photons have the shortest wavelength. This also implies that UVC contain the maximum energy and may thus destroy pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Because it breaks the molecular connections that hold the DNA of bacteria and viruses together, it is an effective tool for decontamination(The Watercooling Co,2023).
The Sketches drawn were formulated over time after feedback I got from my 1:1 Tutorial Sessions.
Using a series of drawing mediums watercolours, pen and markers my concept inspiration came from the basket weaving and cultural aspect of water carrying in Zambia.

THEMES AND DEVELOPMENT OF HARII

This project proposal has based its themes on the Contexts and Methods Module. The Cultural theme being identified in this project is basket weaving and the native water vessel to Sub-Saharan Africans, the Gourd.
Harri, is the name given to a Gourd in my native language which is Nyanja. As the title of this project suggests, ‘THE HARII’ is a representation of my African cultural identity

The first form developed was inspired by a flower known as the Madagascan Periwinkle. The flower is common to Zambian topography and reference to it made the design seem organic. However after my 1:1 tutorial I was advised to incorporate the African Gourd as it related more to the sensitivity of the project.

The last semester commenced with an introduction to the MA 22/23 Report. The report is based on the establishment of practice and our project proposal.
The second seminar was based on the context of the report.
The report required us to give a concise correlation between the estbalishment of practice and our Final project proposal

The second and third seminar were based on the context of the report.
The report required us to give a concise correlation between the establishment of practice and our Final project proposal.

Detailed information relating to the development of the report was given to us with the help of previous work examples.
A guided template on INDESIGN was given to us to be used in the development of the report.

REALISATION OF PRACTICE
L'atelier Bohemian business cards were designed in context with the themes identified in the Contexts and Methods Module.
The Logo was designed with the intention of an abstract illusion of the letter "L" from the practice name L'atelier and "A" from Atelier
The business cards were created to create a trademark for the title blocks which would be used in the final project proposal .

WHAT BOOKS HAVE YOU BEEN READING FOR YOUR FINAL REALISATION?

THEMES

The books chosen correlate to the Contexts & Methods Module in which specific themes were identified.
The Bauhaus was selected because of its characteristic use of primary colors, geometric shapes and visual representation of abstraction in design.
The book Sustainable by Design explores how sustainable principles can be applied within practice.
It gives an understanding of principles of sustainable development by respecting the environment , together with ideas of socio-economic security and social justice.
This book focuses on a salvage industry that identifies the purchase of material deemed to be waste by others.
The book looks at the potential value of waste by Re:Use and Recycle within design practice.

The work of Basquiat has influenced the design layout of this portfolio that showcases my development journey at UCA. I like his use of overlaying text on his drawings and his vibrant use of colour.

CULTURAL IDEOLOGY

In the book by Williams he described culture as "A record of a number of important and continuing reactions to these changes in our social, economic and political life, and may be seen in itself, as a special kind of map" (Williams, 1983).
The highlighted words in yellow show this.
My project proposal titled 'Harii' responds to this notion.
DEVELOPMENT AND PROCESS

Using the themes identified in the Contexts and methods (02). I developed a collage that relays my project proposal. The Collage is a mix of a rendered image from Rhino and a study model that was beginning to develop. I added people for scale and to show the experience users would have underneath the Harii.
Using Photoshop I developed a mood board for the project proposal.
I created this for easier visual communication of the Harii project proposal.
My idea was to develop a mood board that encompasses the cultural essence of Harii.
-Basket Weaving
-African Motifs
-The Gourd/Calabash-Harii
-Recycling Strategies (Use of plastic)
-Logo Design
MORE SKETCHES

The area underneath the filtration system is 112.362m2.
The sketch above was developed to create seating design that would be used within the space.
The idea of shapes through light and shadow was formulated to make the space below interactive . The sketches
shown are a development of the concept.
The sketch of the open riser staircase was developed during a Tutorial session. I was advised to have an open riser staircase after the development of the project.
The sketch above illustrates the idea of recycled plastic that would be reinforced with Y12 bars to make the form malleable for the desired weaving result.

MODEL ASSEMBLY
3mm Birchwood Ply was laser cut and assembled using glue. I cut out square cubes from a sponge to represent the Tanks.

Using my torch light I experimented the use of light and shadow.
I wanted to see what kind of shapes through shadow would be within the space.

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

Using AutoCAD and ArchiCAD I developed the technical drawings for the project proposal. I also created a Title Block in reference to 'An Established Practice' from the Context and Methods Module (2) which includes the Logo I developed for the established practice.
MODEL DEVELOPMENT
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF MODEL
Acrylic paint will then be used to paint the model as it has been represented on the final renders.
The supportive structure needed to be developed further as it was missing a centre support.

The structural base was modified and laser cut again to the right scale. Scaled people were added to envision the space below from a user perspective. The 3D printed weaving mesh was painted with acrylic paint and cutout solar panels from the web were stuck on the Photovoltaic level of Harii.
Nail varnish was applied on the stuck solar panels for a more realistic finish.

DEVELOPMENT OF 3D ANIMATION

The artists identified in the artist statement of the Report namely:
Chike Obeagu, Basquiat and Eduardo Paolozi are artists I find inspiration from.
The artistic impressions were created using Photoshop. The collages were created using newsprint, text, sketches, images of the model and images from the web.

Photoshop was used to enhance visual appeal after the renders were generated from Lumion. People were added and blended in using red colour.
The medium of water colours was represented through Photoshop. I used this effect during the development of the site plan and some sections.
VIDEOS INFLUENCING THE DESIGN

The 2017 Pvailion in London by Francis Kere had a strong influence on the development of Harii. This video helped me realise the traditional seating relative to African stools. This helped me develop seating within the space that relates to Zambian culture.
Renowned architect David Hertz known for his expertise in sustainable architecture offers a unique solution to water abundance by developing a machine that pulls moisture from the earth.
I found this approach very innovative.
This video was insightful as Dr. Kaveh talks about the SDG's and how the world could be affected by looming wars and drought if the 2030 target is not met.

INHABITATION & INTERACTION-STIMULATION OF SENCES

UCA-MA Graduate

The Harii stimulates the senses of its users through the sense of smell taste and touch. Thereby creating an interactive space . The Lavender flowers within the space act as mosquito repellents and fill the space with the scent of Lavender when mistifying water spray falls on them.
The sense of touch is stimulated by water via the mistifying noozles.
Inspired by the African rain dance and the Rainroom-2013. New York. The Harii gives the community a space where they can interact, make baskets, wait for water to be filled up and also acts as a beacon for the community.
