L'atelier Bohemian

My name is Ding'ile Banda and I am a Zambian multidisciplinary designer and architect.
I am a based in Canterbury and I find joy in creating prints and collages that have emerged during my MA Interior Design studies at the University of the Creative Arts (UCA) Canterbury, in 2023.
My MA thesis investigated the extent of groundwater vulnerability within the Sub- Saharan African continent, a problem that is in desperate need for change. My proposal focused on a sustainable system that filtered groundwater for the community as well as provided a hierarchy of space and a beacon for the community.
The thesis was nominated and won the Technical Resolution award in August 2023 and I achieved an overall Distinction grade for the MA Interior Design Course.
Driven by a passion for excellence, I continuously stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies and sustainable construction practices. Overall I am a results oriented interior designer with a strong work ethic and a dedication to delivering projects of the highest quality.

PORTFOLIO

Mwiimba Safari Lodge
The design lends itself to a real 'Bush lodge' setting. The concept was centred around delivery of an authentic African experience.

Sable Room

This private family run game reserve and lodge facility is home to riverine forest and majestic cliff faces looking over the river valleys below.

Villa Chundu
Located in Zambia's suburban country side estate, Villa Chundu is designed to bring contemporary open plan living within a home setting. Inspired by Art-Deco, the clients vision was to bring the aesthetic into their home.

THE THURL
A SENSORY EXPERIENCE

The name of the kids club proposal ‘The Thurl’ is derived from the historical influences of the Thursleston hotel in Devon, United Kingdom. The project proposal focuses on the historical context of the Thurslestone hotel as well as the topography surrounding the site.
The concept of the Thurl was inspired by the hidden gem off the coast of Devon. Thurlestone Rock protrudes out from the sea off Thurlstone sands and is the source of the name of the kids club concept proposal.

Interactive learning is a kind of learning process that actively involves kids in the learning process through participation, interaction, and hands-on activities. Its goals are to stimulate kids' curiosity, broaden their comprehension, and promote their general development (Kumar, 2023).
The Thurl concept proposal focuses on an interactive environment that contextualises the topography of the area by additionally providing a stimulation of senses through touch and taste. This experience has been implemented through the use of mistifiers by providing a tunnel like feature within the space, mimicking Thurlestone Rock.

MOOD BOARD

CASA MELINA
LOUNGE BAR
Inspired by the 19th century Bohemian movement, Casa Melina lounge bar encapsulates the essence of luxury within a sustainable space. There is a perception that sustainability is not synonymous with luxury, which might have been true in the past. Today, however, contemporary sustainable design is capable of balancing luxury and high-end design with longevity and durability.
Casa Melina functions
as a multi purpose space that
serves as a restaurant with a menu of Mediterranean cuisine reflecting strong European and African influences.

REDISTRIBUTION OF GROUNDWATER-A SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM-MA FINAL INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT PROPOSAL

The Harii project proposal investigated the extent of groundwater vulnerability within the Sub-Saharan African continent, a problem that is in desperate need for change.
Through rigorous research and study I found an opportunity to develop and enhance my creativity and problem solving skills by addressing the problem of clean and safe drinking water within the region. Through ethnographic study and engagement with professionals within the practice of water and sanitation in Zambia, it was found that those living in informal settlements are prone to water borne diseases which account for the high number of deaths, especially amongst children under the age of 5.
Mazyopa compound, an informal settlement in Zambia was chosen as the focus of my investigation as over the years it has and still remains a high risk zone of water borne diseases which have been recorded in the country. As a result, the thesis is a proposal for a sustainable filtration system that encompasses space and creates an hierarchy within the community

BLU JEANS BOUTIQUE STORE
05
Blu jeans store was inspired by the principals of the BAUHAUS. The client wanted a space with vibrant colours and a minimalistic approach so as to allow the space to be interchanged into a classroom block/Extra tuition block that the client would utilise for providing math lessons for children who would need it. Situated in Lusaka, Zambia the Blu jeans store concept started out with a sketch using procreate shown in the sketch on the right
